Harry called last night to check up on me as he does from time to time. It got me to thinking that this unique and colorful man should be represented with a thread of his own on this forum. With Dennis Coffey around and now George Katsakis showing up, not to mention Babbitt, there should be some pretty good Harry Balk stories to tell.

When Harry thought you were trying to BS him about something ( which was basically an impossibility with the man ) he had a way of looking at you with his head cocked and the ever present long, thin cigar in his mouth. He would then say things like " Hit the door ".

When Harry moved into his beautiful new office at Motown, Mickey Denton's manager,
John Brooks gave Harry a picture of an owl with it's head cocked, for an office warming gift. John said that was the perfect likeness of Harry with the cocked head and all.

Hi Ralph. A few Harry stories. When I was in the Royaltones and doing sessions for Impact,(I stopped in and saw George last night, he sounded good),and we asked about our money, Harry would always say a week or ten days. In reality, that could mean much longer at times. We used to joke about it. When someone asked us when we would finish something, we would say a week or ten days! When I first moved to LA, I was with 20th Century and Westbound. After attending a meeting at their office in Hollywood, I happened to look up and see a cigar staring out at me from a window as I went to my car. When I decided to investigate, I discovered it was Harry looking out of the window from his office! He called me over and we had a nice visit. Harry was one of the first record producers I worked for before I even knew there were record producers.

Dennis,
Mike Valvano used to refer to Harry As " A Week To Ten Days Harry " You made me laugh on that one. It's true. We would approach Harry with some scam And he'd always say " Give me a week to ten days to think about it"

George here, checking in on schedule. I would have made contact sooner but I had to wait a week to ten days to be proper. I'll be waiting to hear from you.

There was mention of an artist called George McCannon the 3rd somewhere on this thread. It may have been on that link to Impact singles.
I actually have pictures of him that I took in the 60's ehilst on the Gene Pitney tour with Len Barry. He was the opening act and had a crooning pop baritone voice, and he sang Spanish Eyes by Al Martino!!
I have a 3and 1/2 inch crappy reel that I taped on this tour. and I must find it.
All of this stuff is coming back to me, thanks to the forum!!

Is the No. 13 THAT superstitious? I had a look down the old database and the only Detroit labels (or others with Detroit artists) I could find numbered 13 were:
Carrie, Chex, Double-L, Dynamics, Fortune, Gloria, GM, Hot Wax, Invictus, Karen, Mickays, Music Merchant, Mutt, Sidra, SMC, Sound Patterns, Thelma, Topper, Tri-City, Westbound and Wheelsville. Oh, and most of Motown's output too!

OK so I had nothing else to do!

Is there such a record as:

Ric-Tic RT-113 - Fantastic 4 - Can't Stop Looking for My Baby (Part 1)/(Part 2)

I must have seen it on a discography once upon a time!

I have RT-113 listed in one Ric Tic discography with Can't Stop... on both sides, but it doesn't show up in Rod Dearlove's.

I think Ric-Tic 113 is a myth.
But maybe there's something in 13 being unlucky - Solid Hit only made it to issue number 12, and when Thelma Records issued record number 13 - it was their last release! The same with Tuba Records too I believe (2013).

How many 45s did Harry release on his Twirl label? The numbers I have leap - so I guess I'm missing a few. No number 13 again!

1001 Johnny & Hurricanes - Crossfire/Lazy
1002 Dream Girls - Oh This Is Why/Break My Heart
2001 Young Sisters - Casanova Brown/My Guy
2008 Young Sisters - Playgirl/Hello Baby
2009 Vivian Jones - I Wanna Know/Open Arms
2011 Shirley & Sweethearts - Tony/Until You've Tried Love
2012 Johnny Gibson - Beachcomber/Swanky
2016 The Volumes - Maintain Your Cool/I Got Love

Additions welcome!
# 1001 was also released on Warwick and #1002 was also released on Cameo Parkway.

Graham, there are at least a couple dozen Twirl releases, including records by Dave Sandy, Buddy & Stacey, the Carvels, Roger Pace, Ronnie Putirka, the Royaltones, two by Joanne Courcy (including the very expensive I Got the Power), and a bunch of others. If no one else comes across with a full discography, I'll see how close I can come to putting one together. The evidence suggests that Twirl started in Detroit and moved to New York about half way through its lifespan, though that's more an educated guess than real knowledge.

Joe,

The recording that you have listed by Dave Sandy is probably "Goin Swimin" it was the first Royaltone recording venture into the vocal market and all of a sudden without consultation it was released as Dave Sandy, the singer and second sax with the Royaltones at that time. It is also one of the contributing factors of the breakup of the Royaltones.

Also, just noticed:
Anybody know more about Gregory Carroll (writer/producer of 'I Got The Power') or R Walgear (co-writer ditto). I have listed publishing credits of the Volumes as Vicki Music and JoAnne Courcy - Ricki Music. I guess one or t'other is a typo.

It was for Harry that I was trying to locate this information. He joked about the fact that it was his label and he couldn't remember what was on it. I'l talk to him about Twirl. Also I'll mention the possibility that Impact 1013 doesn't exist if a record was omitted because of superstition over the # 13. That could be a possibility. Apparently Harry has a computer now and I told him he should come on the forum. He has visited the Tera Shirma site. However, he told me he barely knows what he's doing with the computer so I doubt if we'll see him here. I'll try an be his go-between.

Hey Collcat its The Count,I have all records of TWRIL&BIG TOP,( PROMOS &RELEASED)i DONT WANT TO BE A BORE OR SOUND LIKE THE AUTHORITY, SO HERE ARE A FEW THINGS OF INTEREST.#3008 Was on big top,Ronnie Putirka, happy street,&never never land(MY GROUP 5IVE iNVICTAS WORKED WITH RONNIE)RONNIE ALSO INTRODUCED US TO EMANUAL LASKY,HE WAS PROMOTING WELFARE CHEESE AT THE TIME.Back to twirl,#2003Autumn Mood&Greyhound,by Maximilian(MAX CROOK)our first aceatate was recored at Max's house in Ann Arbor down his basement. This was released to Belltone records,Harry Thumb Print did not like the hand clapping and so called shananigans in the backround. This is where we learned about over dubbing, when Max Crook asked if we want to put hand clapping in this,we looked puzeled and said, how can we do that and play at the same time, then he showed us,so we did it. Max was very amazing and the best inovater i ever mwt. Del Shannons song would not be what they were if it wasn't for that eerie and great sounding Musitron. The 5ive Teen Beats also had a recordig called Autumn Mood. Same title but different in sound.A great insturmental that still gives me the wonderful feeling of those GOOSE BUMPS.I play that song alot when i go on WDTRradio on sundays. And that was on the Big Top lable.I am getting carried away now and promised not to get boring, sorry I broke my promise, but I love this and all I have known and those who visit this site .

George McCannon III had a 45 on Phi-Dan, with the side called "Seven million people" being the Northern side.

Never seen Ric-Tic 113 or 126 either - heard the same rumours about them being scheduled for The Mark IV, Fantastic 4 and even Little Ann. No sign of Impact 1013 either!

Twirl - Johnny Gibson....anyone familliar with his material on a label called GTM...maybe out of Detroit or NYC? He was from Nebraska, wasn't he?

Rose Batiste on Thelma - yes the stock copies seem to be cream in colour, but there are proper white promos too.

Columbia codes - nowp, never been 100% sure on the ZTSV / VTSC.....always assumed (dangerous I know!) that they were mis prints.

So many questions eh?!

David
-p.s. notice there's another DF on list, so maybe I'll start signing off as Flynny from now on :-)

Nick - your version of "A Way To Love You" is fantastic (it was also released on a 45 by The Volumes). Have you heard about the theory that "Oh How Happy" was written by Edwin Starr with the German national anthem in mind? I think he was stationed there during his army days. Do you hear the resemblence?
Oh yes, Welcome to the forum!

Hi Graham; about "oh how happy" the fact is we sat down in front of my two track at the Golden World studios and worked the song out from edwins idea. so you might say we co-wrote! By the way we have never recieved any mechanics or dime one from our recordings

Believe it or not, George McCannon the 3rd opened for the Gene Pitney tour the Len Barry co-headlined in 1966 . He did Spanish Eyes in his crooning baritone voice and another on which I do not remember.

Nick, regarding the non receipt of rotalties, join the never ending bandwagon, mate!!
It's never too late for a lawsuit.

I thought about you when I heard this... I listened to an interview with Del Shannon last night and was amused to hear that his second hit was actually a disguised tribute to Mr Balk - Hats Off To Larry = Hats Off To HARRY!
