I thought you should have your own posting!
I'd like to complete the details on some of the 45s you have and hope you can fill in the blanks for me.....
Did John Merlino own Meadowbrook, or was it a collaboration with Ernie Stratton?
Is the Chico Holiday 45 on the Meadowbrook label?
Could you please let me have both A and B side details - song titles, and the numbers on the label.
The same with Linda Rae's "Earthquake" 45.
How many lurkers have contacted you about buying your "Head And Shoulders" 45 DeAnne?
Best wishes,
Graham

Under the topic 'Patti Young' dated December of last year, a friend of mine, Dave Moore, is certainly looking for a copy! He has a superb collection - Yvonne Vernee, Del Larks etc. etc. and Patti Young would definitely fit in!

i think we are all big enough and ugly enough to handle our own affairs but it's still worth reminding our friends who are new to the subject of northern soul that there are people out there who would give you 2 cents for records like 'head and shoulders'....and not flinch over it.

to everybody out there, please be careful if anyone approaches you. get a proper valuation.

I have to say that it has been my experience, that those rogues are few and far between..

But your word of warning is probably a good thing.

I have been "rogued" on occasion but backed out at the last minute. Does anyone know the current value of the Meet The Supremes album with them sitting on stools on the cover?? Also the first Martha and the Vandellas album??

Top of pageBottom of page   By John ancient Lester (213.122.190.162 - 213.122.190.162) on Tuesday, March 12, 2002 - 01:55 pm:

Supremes bar stools cover..it was suggested about 1200 dollars.

Come and Get These Memories is a bit harder to say.........Memories is being re-issued in stereo on CD this month in the UK....in fact all Martha's studio albums are being re-issued with bonus tracks.

For me, there's something about picking up a record and looking at it and admiring it..somehow, CD's dont seem to hold the same fascination. I suppose some would call it "old age". When Clay McMurray said he still liked the feel of 2" tape rather then computer technology, I was thinking.."I'm with you there Clay, good on you" sometimes, you know, progress is not always better.

John,

I concur with the above mentioned items.
Give me vinyl anyday insofar as "warmness" is concerned. The noise at the beginning of "Neither one of us... by Gladys.. is something to behold!!
CDs although do offer a deeper look into the previously unheard thimgs i.e. the fret noise on Jamerson's bass at the intro My Girl, and the subtle bass drum squeek. Listen with phones!!!
On Aint no mountain, there is some "Foreign" noise in the intro and first verse.

Ahh, the beauty of the past. Where is H.G. Wells when you need him???

Didn't get home until late last night...no chance to scan records and play...off to work again...no rest for the wicked. What is "Head and Shoulders" really worth?? I only have one copy. I do however have a few copies of Linda Rae on Meadowbook...and some others. I'll try and get home early tonight and do some scaning for you. Is the Young Sisters "Casanova Brown" something you would be interested in? It's funny...when I was hired at the Grandale Bar in 1963 I replaced the Young Sisters and I met Patty. They were nice girls. With all of your information, does anyone know what happened to them? Is it possible to e-mail my record? I think that you would really enjoy "Look At Me Mama". I played Head and Shoulders last weekend, and I really believe that my record is just as good. Listen to me!!Ha. All motown musicians are playing on the record, and I bet Jamison might remember it. A guy from Nashville Bob Johnston arranged it, and it was a real R&B number until right in the studio, he decided to double time the whole song which made it kind of sugar sounding instead of soulful. It's still a great song. Talk to you later.

It is possible to e-mail music, but the file produced in 'WAV' format tends to be huge. I have recently started to experiment recording my singles onto the PC. I recorded Hattie Littles singing 'Here You Come' which is 2 mins 36 seconds of early Gordy magic! This becomes 13megabytes of computer gunk in CD quality format. Double in stereo! You can produce smaller files, but the quality disappears with the file size! There is a format called MP3 which compresses the digital data into a smaller file but I don't know how to do this yet!

Having said that, I would LOVE to hear your record - and the others you mentioned! I'm sure the others woulds agree! (...background salivating noises...)

The bar was The Grandale Bar, and it was located on Plymouth Road near Southfield. I do have some old Panorama's the local bar newspaper from 65-69
I promise that this weekend, I will go through them and list all of the bars for you with their locations. This could be fun. I am not sure about the old phone book. I still have lots of relatives in Detroit, I could ask if anyone has an old one. Did you try to contact the actual yellow pages people??? I'll bet they archive that information, and you could request just the pages you need from lounges and bars. Anyway, Keith I stayed up later than I should because I love the forum....got to go now.

I looked through the 60's Yellow Pages in the Detroit library; searching "Clubs" and "Cocktail Lounges" and whatever else - there wasn't any listed - you'll probably have to find the name of the bar/club in the white pages.
I did find adverts for the various popular clubs in Detroit - see Ritchies site - and most have addreses on the ad'.

In the mid 70's I played the Grandale with some band I was in at the time. It had become a biker bar. Six or seven clubs frequented the place. We were there for several weeks and the entire time not one fight broke out. Quite an experience. They did love to party.

Hi DeAnne, I'm no expert on the value of 45s - but my guesstimate is around 400 dollars for Patti Young. I know there was a book published in the UK that lists record values - aimed at the UK northen soul market. Has any reader here got a copy of Manship's price guide?
The best thing to do (I think) is put it on ebay and see how much people bid.
All the best, Graham

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie Hardin (62.254.0.6 - 62.254.0.6) on Thursday, March 14, 2002 - 02:23 pm:

Hi Deanne

I've been selling stuff on eBay for over two years now, and if you decided to go down that route, I'd strongly recommend you use a "Reserve Price". That's a price that's undisclosed to the bidders (the minimum you'd accept) at the start of the auction.

In this way, you would not lose out if the bids didn't reach your expectations. E.G. if you listed it at only $100 and one guy bid, you'd be committed to the sale. A "Reserve price" guarantees your minimum asking price has to be bid or bettered for the auction to finish with a sale. In this way, there's no obligation on you to sell for less than your set minimum.

DeAnne Thanks for responding to my request re clubs, Bars etc in D town. I know you haven't asked specific advice about selling that 45 but DON'T EVER DO IT!!
After being totally consumed by anything & everything Detroit my tastes changed over the years and one casualty was selling Patti Y. Yes, I got big bucks and normally I don't miss stuff I sell but that was one 45 I do regret. There are some good, some very good and then there are some awesome records, out of Detroit - that is one of 'em!

The mail must have taken about a half hour to download with my miserable modem, but FINALLY I have the results right here on my PC. Guys and Gals, I have never spent a more worrying time hoping that the Internet link didn't disconnect while downloading - BT Internet software seems to cut you off after about 5 or 10 mins of inactivity! I've played your songs for the last quarter of an hour into the old headphones. Wow! DeAnne you weren't joking! The second song 'Look At Me Mama' must be about 300mph, I think the musicians' hands must have been smoking after finishing that one! 'Love, The Second Time' is a bit slower but still uptempo with a Motownish backing.

Thanks VERY much indeed DeAnne!

DeAnne,
I'm sorry to hear about Joel. I didn't know he had died.

Ian,
There was plans to do a nationally broadcasted music show out of Detroit called The Swingin' Kind, hosted by Detroit DJ Lee Alan. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure if we wrote the song for the show or not, but I suppose that was the case. At any rate, the pilot show was aired, but after that the show died. The first show was good. It had Stevie Wonder...The Coasters..The Sunliners..The Shangrillas, Leslie Gore and the Choker Campbell Band.

I was always a very big fan of the Coasters, and after the show was taped, one of the Coasters asked me if I wanted to go play a round of golf with him.I wasn't a golfer, But call me Tiger..lets go!! And then I learned the band had to be somewhere and I had to pull out of the golf game.

That Sidra ad is a beauty! There were some very good records on that label... even an album (by Lafayette & The LaSabres) that Mike Valvano was involved with.

I belonged to Ruby's troupe from 1964 until 1970 or so. We did volunteer shows at Jackson prison, Milan Prison, Dehoco, and military bases all around Michigan and in Marquette. We did at least one a month...sometimes two. We were a different bunch ranging from ages 3-83. We always had a great band to close the show, and a great line of dancers to open it. The Topics did a lot of shows with us....and the bus rides were always an adventure.

Somewhere on this forum, I told you about your brother, but I can't remember where. Anyway. In January, Eddie and I renewed our vows for our 5th year. Your brother married us as his chapel. It was so much fun. I wish that he still played bass more. He is so busy with the chapel, he doesn't have time anymore. He played up to about three or four years ago with a great little country western band. I used to go sit in with them, and do old rock and roll tunes, and the few country tunes that I knew "Right or Wrong", and Crazy" etc. We should write that book. Kelly and I want to get a Terry and The Topics website, that maybe the guys here would let us link to. There were over seveny musicians that went through that group from 1960-(early teenbeats) to 1978 when they disbaned. That's a lot of great musicians. Oh the stories. Talk to you soon.

Hello everyone..Hello DeAnne, Steve The Count, and all. I was turned on to this site by George K and am blown away by all of your writings and memories. Visited George at the Clawson last weekend and he told me about September. I'll be there ....listening. Steve, I was touched by your rememberances of my partners on the radio. Don Zee followed me at midnight for all those years...would love to have copies of those airchecks you have. And that picture of Joel. Dear Brother Joel. He and I were first on TV with a New Year's Eve party. It lead to the beginning of Club 1270. Anyone remember? Yes, sadly we lost Joel to bone cancer a few years ago. Dave Prince and I attended his memorial service in Chicago. Went to his home there. Visited with his wife and son Mark who looked just like Joel. DeAnne: Re: "The Swingin' Kind". The show was conceived by me and John Pival, the President of WXYZ-Channel 7. There were three of them. One was the one mentioned. That one took place at Edgewater Park. The second one was downtown at the Michigan Consolidated Gas building with The Supremes and other Mowtown folks. The third was at Metropolitan Beach with Stevie, Lesly Gore, Coasters, Back Porch Majority and others. I have a poster pic of that one. It is also in David Carson's book. Do any of you have the book? The show achieved phenominal ratings and Mr. Pival intended it to be nationally syndicated through ABC's Circle 7 productions; but just as we were about to go national the political forces at the station got to the ABC brass on New York and Mr. Pival was forced out...and thus the show died. John Pival was a great inovator and original thinker. Discovered Soupy and all other live things on Channel 7 in the fifties and 60s. Joel and I were fraternity brothers...thus the "Brother Joel and Brother Lee" thing. Yes, he was all you said. Talented, kind, and all that. I will copy this and put it on the forum site that Goerge K started about me. I'll check in here now and then and would love to talk with you all again. I also have some pics, but don't yet know how topost them here. My personal email is leeallan at aol dot com. Would love to hear from everyone here and there. Love, respect, and memories....Lee Alan..."On The Horn"

Thanks so much for your fond memories. You absolutely did dance with the best of them and you were the very best. Your talent and personality have always been tops. I will look forward to getting that pic of Brother Joel. I am thrilled to "see" you all here and hear your remembrances. Kind words are empty unless they are true. So...kind words to you and all....Lee Alan

Dear Lee, I will be so glad to see you on the 6th of September. It will be almost 40 years since I danced on your show and dreamed about the future. What a trip it has been. Radio has been my life. You were a big part of that dream. Thank you.

Yes,we had a real good time at Clawson. All us "old folks" reminiscing about the business long ago. PLUS we're all still IN IT! That's even cooler. When we all go to the great beyond, there better be lots of rock & roll,or we're coming back! Anyway,we had lots of fun,& we're not done yet. We've got some great new projects going.

Dear Dick...Over the years, I have hearddso much from George (Terry) regarding Harry Balk and Irv Mechanic. how did you meet them?? Were you signed with them a long time? Didn't you have a different name other than "The Teenbeats" when you met them?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Dick Stanford (4.33.134.129 - 4.33.134.129) on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 - 01:52 am:

DeAnne we met Harry and Irving I believe in 1958in the spring and signed with them early in 1959 to the best of my recollection we did not record until the summer of 1959.Our first date was in chess stuidios in Chicago.Harry was not pleased with the result,so we came home and Harry set a date in New York at Bell Sound. That was in the fall of 59 we recorded Autumn Mood. The band was made up of 5 of us George"Count"Sheehan, drums Bill Frizell piano,it was Bill who wrote Autumn Mood theres a story about the name I'll go into later.Rod Cox played guitar Rod later left our band and went on to play with the Sunliners,Rare Earth, also on guitar was Chuck Chittinten and myself Dick Stanford on bass.Back to the story about the name Autumn Mood,it was orginally called Summer Mood but Harry did not get the deal for us from Big Top in time for a summer release so hence we changed the name.As far as the bad name was concerned, yes we had a different name when we began as I remember it was the "Madero's and Irving Macanic changed it to the "Teenbeats" which was changed to the "5 Teenbeats" which was changed to Dick and the Teenbeats. And just to clear up a lot of scuttle about the name changes I personally had nothing to do with it,but I think most of it came from Big Top offices in New York.Hope this info helps you and there is any thing more you need just ask, seeyou soon love Dick Stanford.

Thanks, Dick, That clears up a lot about The Madeero's. I remember when George "The Count" Sheehan used to be the "drummer of the time". Was "Mr. Irving" written about Irv Mechanic? Who wrote it?

Also, as a P.S. George "The Count" Sheehan Passed away three year ago today. Just preserving his memory. He was a great drummer, and a better singer. His drumming is noted in Joe Padorsic's memo's tonight. I miss him tremendously, and so do all of his friends.

DeAnne,

The plan is on and I wanted to make sure to stay in touch. So far, Dave Kovarik, Nick Palise, John Brooks, Bob Babbitt, Dennis Coffey, Lee Alan, Marilyn Bond, George Young and Millie have stopped by so I know we are in for a good time when you make your appearance. Get your song list ready.

Dear George, I can still sing all the old standard rock and roll stuff. I'm so glad everyone is coming. It's even better that so many people are stopping by now to say..."Hi" now and not Sept. This weekend I will be in California... won't be able to visit the forum. The last time I left I had about fivc old friends visit the forum. I will be here tomorrow until the early afternoon and back Sun. I will miss all of the fun stuff while I'm gone.

Still in Simi Valley California, but I had to tell you that Dick Stanford (Bossi) and Barbara his wife came over last night. That guy has a million stories about old record sessions. We laughed the night away about our old experiences with Dick and The Teenbeats. Can't wait to get home so that I can really take more time with the new 20 Grand link....what a beautiful job!!

I know Bob Torgerson very well. we were team teachers in 1975-1978 at Bishop Borgess. We taught Forensics and Debate. How do you know Bob?? I went back to Detroit last year to see his daughter graduate from high school. He is living near Holland Mi. and directing plays at a high school there. He is still one of my very dear friends. Let me know who you are????

DeAnne...
Here's a clue to the John Maris post...think of Chuck Barris and the Gong Show...

yep...It's Bob's brother Gary. Amazing that I found you on this site. Reading the posts gave me a great deal of insight into the music scene in the '60's. I wanted to go into radio at the time, especially after listening to Lee Alan and Joel Sebastian ("Watch how you drive that automobile tonight...and don't you dare turn it into a couple tons of deadly weapon"). I even watched you dance on Club 1270 (only didn't know it at the time). When I went to Kimball High, they had their own FM station at the time that went out over Royal Oak...and I did the Torg Show and announced football/basketball games. It was great seeing you at Bob's last summer and I hope to see you when you return to Detroit. And just by coincidence, I had dinner last night at the Clawson...
All My Best, Gary

Gary...wonderful to hear from you. I guess we are on the wrong thread of the forum...they closed this one down and we should be writing on DeAnne too. Haven't talked to Bob and Margie lately but, I was going to see about the possiblility of them coming to the Detroit area in Sept. I know it's a ride across the state but I would love to see them, and I will be there for five days. Please come to Clawson on Sept. 6th...I would love to see you.
