Hi Jack ,

Bobby Eli here. It was Yvonne Fair who sang lead with Yvonne Fair and the Sensatios, who were famous for "Let Me In", and the original version
( a ballad version) of I sold my heart to the junkman. When Weldon and I helped out Ian Levine in the search to find the Philly artists for the "Northern Soul" bio-pic, we went to visit Yvonne at her home in North Philly which was across the street from my old junior high school, James G. Blaine!! Originally she was from west Philly. There is a "Northern" favorite which recorded and it is more than likely the one that you and Mike produced.
She was reluctant to perform, as the others had done, due to her bitterness toward the biz. She did although, agree to an interview.
Darryl, E-mail me and we can discuss anything that you like regarding your dad.
Also your brother ,Kae junior is and lod friend of mine.

Cheers,

Bobby Eli

Hi Darryl
sorry to butt in here but I think its Yvonne Fair
of "Stay a little longer" & "It should have been me" fame on Motown.
Also are we talking of the Kae Williams Jr.
who produced those wonderful records on Curtis Hairston in the eighties or is that someone else?.

David,

Eli here. Here's the story. Billy Jackson who just came on the forum, and Gene Dozier are two different people. The mixup is that Gene(Ugene) Doziers' real name is William Jackson!!!
He made up the name Ugene Dozier, as a tribute to Lamont, and to make people think that he was Lamont's cousin!!!!!!! He used to work on early G&H things like Dusty The Sweets, and Pickett.
No one seems to know where he is now.

Mr Jackson - another honour for us to cherish.

I walked in to a record shop in 1974 and asked what's new out? The guy said take a listen to this - It's called 'you little trustmaker' by The Tymes. It started and I looked at my friend in the eye with surprise. It was different and seemed to 'float'. Then, just a few months later Miss Grace and that opening - it's just like you've gone to heaven, the angels are singing and they are checking your paperwork at the gate to let you in! And then 'Someway Somehow' - great song too. The Tymes have wonderful, wonderful voices and their seasoned style was so evident. To see those disco lights flashing, people moving on the dance floor and most of all being happy makes me so honoured to have been there and witnessed something special in my life. I used to stand on the side of the dance floor trying to work out how you all did this and so well. The strings, guitar and vibes, the bass line that jumps out and vocals. Why didn't I like the same music as most of my friends? Why could I tell a good song at 100 paces - well, to me anyway? It goes so deep and there is an answer that keeps coming up 'tyme and tyme' again! I think it is spiritual and moving and that explains the 'trance' I would be in whilst dissecting all this music. I still do it now and would not be without it. When I bought The Tymes CD it had the slightly different mixes on compared to the hit versions here and I love the extended 'God's gonna punish you', which I hold in very high esteem. My best friend sadly passed on at only 40 years old and he adored the song. He bought the single and never stopped playing it. He always liked more 'modern' soul, things like 'God's gonna' and I remember he bought 'Walk away from Love' by David Ruffin and I could not get to like it! Now, 24 years later, I play these two and I cry for him and the time we spent growing up together at school and our first ventures into the disco, where we started to hear a different type of music like this and learning to dance. Very special music and very special times created by special people.

I thank you

Carl Dixon

Lester
Believe me wandering into this site has opened up a whole new world for me. I actually happened onto this site when I was looking for information on the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown film". Alan Slutsky and a group of high school kids including me played in a Soul band for about 3 years before we all went our separate ways. However I have been in contact with his family and they have been keeping me informed about the progress of the film as well. Besides that my bother former DJ Carl Helm worked with Kae at WDAS and I had the good fortune of meeting him when he was in the studio doing his thing. When I saw Bobby Eli's name I just started remembering all the music that came off of those turntables and watching the lights on the phone light up. There was nothing like the music coming out of Detroit and Philly when I was going through my teen years. This forum is fantastic! Who knows if this site continues to grow like it is and the right connections are made. I'll bet you'll see a new revolution of old heads jamming it up!

There ain't nuttin like that Philly Groove!

Lonnie

"You Didn't Say A Word" by Yvonne Baker is a fabulous record. I wonder if you were intentionally going for a "Goldfinger" kind of sound with the backing track.

Yvonne Fair (different person) was also quite talented. She even did one record here in Miami, "Say Yeah Yeah", for Henry Stone's Dade label.

Not exactly northern soul but some they made some great jazz-funk that got released around '80, I've got the first album around here and I think there was at least one other. Let's keep talkin Philly up in here.

Hi Kae from London! Great photo. I am one of those sad people that loves Radio identifications and memorabilia as well as great soul sounds from Detroit and Philly. I have had a look around and the nearest I got to WDAS, was this;

http://www.reelradio.com/ideas/index.html#gavin71

If you scroll down to 'The R & B dj of the year' section and hit play, then once Real Player is up, move down to 1' 37". You can listen to Philly DJ Jimmy Bishop when he was nominated for the award in 1970! I will see if I can find anything on WDAS and Kae senior. Just love those old jingles.

Here I go again!! When I lived on 32nd and Diamond sts. while growing up, that is when I was
first weened off of clasical music DIRECTLY into R&b. The money that I got to buy my lunch was put toward the latest 45. The first single that I bought upon recommendation from a friend was "Come go with me" by the Del Vikings.
I took the 60 cents that my dad gave me and walked DIRECTLY to the KAE WILLIAMS RECORD SHOP
on York street between 32nd and 33rd. street, not far from Fairmount Park. I spent many a day going there on the way home from school and on Saturday afternoons. His lovely wife Vi, and Ruthie, one of the girls who worked there would always let me go through al of the latest releases , some of which were promo items as well. Many times they gave me freebies as well. His store had many , many photos on the wall which today would be priceless. I remember Vi playing me "Get a job" on a 78 on Kaiser, the rarest version of it, then Junior and finally Ember, on two different label types!!! If anyone knows the origin of"Kaiser", you will get a gold medal!!( not you Kae or Daryl)
The rare followup was Headin for the poorhouse.
I first heard Yvonne Baker and the sensations there , Teardrops by Lee andrews and the Hearts, so many future classics right in that funky little store on York street.
On the radio, Kae's primary love was the blues, the REAL BLUES. Howlin Wolf, Muddy,T- Bone,
Etta James,Guitar Slim,Slim Harpo and of course, Jimmy Reed. Every now and then he would sneak in a white record and he would say "here is a little pop number for you all" like At the hop, by Danny and the Juniors for his ehite listeners, although I think that he didn't want to play that stuff by the sound of his voice but he had to.(payola, the five finger handshaake) A man had to feed his kids. Wages were not high at all for Black radio people and they were so underappreciated by the white, Jewish station owners. Max Leon owned WDAS and Dolly Banks owned WHAT.
Kae was an original indeed . Most do not know that he was the bass voice on Get a Job because the real one did not show up at Robinson Labs , next to Gimbels department store where it was cut. WIP radio shared the facility.
Daddy Kae, what can I say!!!!
B.Eli

I have a pic of my Mom with Johnny and Joe (Over the mountain) standing in front of the record shop. Unfortunately, many of the pics and other stuff of my dad's has gotten away. My brother and I do have his catalog and my brother is in the process of putting some stuff together from the Junior Records material. You probably saw me at the record shop at least once. Yes as little Darryl though.

I think this site is tremendous indeed and really look forward to checking for the new stuff.
