The Minor Key was AWESOME!!! I saw Maynard Furgeuson there twice...Bill Doggett and who can remember who else? Great place...great seating...Loved to sit up in the balcony and look right down on the band. When Maynard's horn section put their horns in an upward position to play they were aimed right at the balcony. It was incredible!!!!

I REMEMBER SEEING MILES DAVIS AT THE MINOR KEY SOMETIME DURING THE MID 60'S. GREAT SET BUT THE CIGARETTE SMOKE WAS SO THICK I DON'T KNOW HOW THE MUSICIANS BREATHED (SMILE).

many people speak fondly of the minor key.
sadly another piece of music history that has been demolished.

When Bob Babbit, Dennis Coffey and I worked together we used to go to the Minor Key after the gig and then we would also go to the Checker BarBQ another great place for after hour jam session.

It's great to see that ticket at the top again. Does anyone remember seeing J.J. Johnson at the Minor Key? How about Ramsey Lewis? M.F. was there quite often - one night he introduced a young budding singer, and daughter of a minister in Detroit named Aretha. She sat in and played and sang one or two songs... am I the only one to remember that?

I recall my old boss at Charly once told me the "M.F." on the front of the band's music stands stood for something quite different to Maynard's initials, as was a hard task master! Love his "Mambo Le Mans" track...real hard hitting big Latin jazz number...and the LP cover had him sat in an E-Type Jaguar complete with three wind-screen wipers!
Anyway, back to the soul....... ;-)

Flynny,
The MF on the music stands may well have had other connotations than Maynard's initials, but it would have been a completely acceptable definition to describe this incredible band.

Oh.......silly me
I thought MF was another way of saying Babbitt!!

See John, you get to hanging around Babbitt long enough, he has you talking his language. It won't be long now and you'll be beating up your friends.

Very good point Ritchie. Very good. In reality there is only one true Babbitt. I know the guy. Believe me, he is truly one of a kind.
