Can someone educate me on the quality of vinyl used in LP pressings? While in high school, I joined the Columbia Record Club and purchased about 40 Motown LPs. The stereo system I used until I left home could be compared to a Mack Truck. The surface noise on these vinyls after years of normal play (mid 60s - mid 70s) can be described as minimal compared to the store-bought LPs. Both groups are still quiet enough to make good quality, quiet CD copies. I am really amazed at how the vinyls have stood against the tests of time and use.

Good question nabob. I wonder about the various quality of "vinyl" that pressing plants such as Columbia used. Someone once told me there were 3 or 4 different qualities to choose from, with DJ/promo copies usually having the best quality. Perhaps someone here on the forum can elaborate.
One thing about UK made records - most utilised high grade material, especially record companies like Decca; their 45s are prety thick. Unfortunately they didn't release many soul 45s.
