Power of Zeus was Joe Peraino's band...he was a staff producer at Motown and worked with blues great Luther Allison.

What about Stoney and Meatloaf??

Power Of Zeus is getting attention these days because of a drum break that's been sampled -- I'm not sure who sampled it, but it's driven up the price of the original album.

I don't know about the Rare Earth sampler but I just had to butt in and give props to two acts with strong Miami ties that were on Rare Earth:

Impact Of Brass (lots of Miami guys, they used to play hotels and clubs here a lot)
Magic (Miami group that relocated to Michigan. Their first album was on Henry Stone's tiny Armadillo label.)

According to Joe Peraino, the guitarist for Power of Zeus, their LP sold for $135 on e-bay! Two original members are still alive, Bill Jones, who played bass, and Peraino. There's even a nightclub in London named after the group, as well as a website with the same name!

FYI... Stoney (Shawn Murphy)is now the lead singer
of Little Feat.

Millie,
I was aware that Bob Mahalski, the drummer in Power of Zeus had died a couple of years ago. However, I'm not sure about Denny Webber, the keyboardist. Please ask Peraino for me when you talk to him. This was the first band I ever produced.

Hi Ralph..
I spoke with Joe this afternoon...he told me that he and Bill Jones were the only living members of Power of Zeus so I guess that means that Denny Webber is no longer with us.

Thanks Millie,
Sorry to hear about that. Denny Webber was a MONSTER keyboardist. There were times before a session would begin that Denny would be at the piano playing Bach or Beethoven. He was a nice rather quiet kind of guy.

Millie,
I checked out the Power Of Zeus website. Rather interesting. The guy that created it doesn't give any way to contact him. Too bad. He's curous about the group and I could tell him things. I guess he did make contact with Peraino.

One I'd like to hear again is The Messengers'
"In The Jungle" - a very odd track, especially
for Motown. I wish I could describe it properly
but I haven't heard it in over 25 years - I'm
pretty sure it's got animal noises on it but
maybe that's my imagination. Miles better than
the A-side. "When you sleep all night in the jungle, the animals are all around .."

Davie G ( G as in gibbering !)

another one I haven't heard is Blue Scepter
(formerly SRC) - probably not as great as their
"Badazz Shuffle" but I still want to hear it.

The Virgil Brothers "Temptataion 'bout To Get Me"
I think I heard this once - an Australian duo
covering the brilliant Knight Brothers track.
