Well TD, it looks like you created a monster here. This particular thread has created a lot of controversy on the forum. I suppose that's a good thing. That is what forums are about. I allowed the first thread to get overly long because I assumed the subject would play out. Boy, was I ever wrong. Let's see where this additional thread leads us.

Sue - regarding that Johnnie Mae Matthews 45 on the Northern label that you picked up the other day; Does it simply say Johnnie Mae Matthews - or does it also credit The Dapps? I'd really appreciate the master numbers too - if there are any. And no - this isn't a wind-up (LOL).
TIA, Graham

Graham,
You can wind me up any time ...the label says just "Johnnie Mae Matthews" ...it's not Northern, but Reel Records, Detroit, Mich.

The number is "112" ...

Thanks Sue. You know what they say... If you can't beat 'em - join 'em.

Graham,
I buy old records, but I don't think anything could get me interested in the B sides. So we have half a common interest though!

Good morning Sue - when I asked the question I thought you'd got a different 45. Nevermind, that Reel record you have has a great B-side - My Lttle Angel, which was Johnnie Mae's biggest hit. Have you flipped it over yet? I'll get you into B-sides, even if it kills me (smile).
Funnily enough it was also released nationally on a NY label called...Sue! You can hear her singing an overdub, which was pretty unusal at that time (1961). She could never understand how the flip became so popular - but it's one of my favorite recordings.
Johnnie Mae started touring on the back of its success and neglectd her roster of artists, which at the time included The Distants. They became frustrated and joined Motown: Voila!... The Temptations. Now we're not just talking about ultmate Motown songs - but the ultimate soul group.
Best wishes, Graham

Yep I'm well aware of the great Sue label. I have the CD compilation of Sue's greatest hits.

If only we had a similar collection of Golden World, not to mention a collection of Fortune Records.

When it comes to records, I love what I heard on Detroit radio, which are the A sides mostly ...

It's great to see the thread do well. I still feel that I Can't Help Myself will be the Ultimate Motown song years from now. I know alot of peole think Dancing In the Street will share that honor.
So now that we have a good list. I will list what I think the top ten songs from Motown will ultimately be:

1. I Can't Help Myself
2 My Girl
3. I Heard It Through The Grapevine
4. For Once In My Life
5. What Becomes Of the Broken Hearted
6. Stop In the Name Of Love
7. Reach Out
8. What Does It Take
9. Tracks Of My Tears
10.Dancing In The Street
11.What's Going On- I could not leave this off thelist...

I'm pleased to see "What becomes of the broken hearted" on your list TD.

Every time I hear it on radio it sounds fantastic.

So does "I've passed this way before".

My favorite Jimmy Ruffin song and one of my personal top ten is the great "Gonna Give Her All the Love I've Got". what a great opening bass line and Jimmy never sounded so good.

FYI, Gonna Give Her All The Love.. has also proved a very popular song among Jamaican artists - usually re-titled as "When I See Her" and the composition credited to whoever sings it!

I am sure I recall criticism of Jimmy Ruffin for vocal performances in Motown circles.

Am I correct?

I just bought "Cellarful of Motown and there are several excellent Jimmy Ruffin songs on it and his vocals are just fine.

What's Going On
Just My Imagination
Here I Am Baby (Marvelettes)
Living In Shame
Who's Gonna Take The Blame?
Superstition
Brick House (for some reason, this doesn't fit, but it is one of Motowns best sellers)

After sleeping on it, I really feel that including "Brick House" borders on blasphemy...and we're not talking about bestsellers or favorites, but what songs actually epitomize the Motown "era"...so, I'll replace "Brick House" with "It's A Shame"...
