I'm trying to find out if anyone here has seen a 45 rpm (any title) of BOBBY HOLIDAY (or HOLLIDAY) on the STAX label. Supposedly, Bobby Holiday is Bobby Calhoun (who sang with the Diablos and the Velvet Angels in the 60s). When we first met Bobby (Calhoun) on our visit to the Motor City in '98, HE told us of him recording under that name and label. I have not been able to find any documentation to this, nor have I ever seen a copy of any 45s confirming this. If anyone here has any insight or info, please post. And a label scan of one of his Stax recordings would be appreciated, if at all possible.

Thanks in harmony,

Nikki :)

I just text-searched through the listing for the two "Stax Singles" box sets, and the name Bobby Holiday/Holliday didn't appear.

There was a Bobby Holiday single on PORT 70027 released in 1961 - COME HOME b/w MY LETTER, but I've no idea if this is "your" Bobby.

Hi Ritchie,

Thanks for your input. I HAVE the Port 45, and it's no connection to Bobby Calhoun's Bobby Holiday. BTW, that Port 45 is super record, with a good unlisted back-up group!

Hi Nikki

I'll take your word for it - all I have is plain black-and-white text on a discography listing!

Dowoplady - when I was a kid, I had a 78rpm called 'Till then', by The Four Knights I think. I miss that record and have not heard it for over 30 years. I had loads of The Four Aces stuff too -wonderful. Although a little early for me, I still love those songs and harmonies. No doubt you will have heard of these acts?

Hi Nikki,

I think I've the answer to your query.

There's a 1970 single "Baby I Love You" / "Moving
Dancer" on Weis 3005 by Bobby Holley.

Weis was a small Chicago based label which issued
a few independently distributed singles locally
then signed a distribution deal with Stax.

"Moving Dancer" is on a UK CD "Stax Funk 2"
(Stax CDSXD128).

Weis issued around a dozen or so singles including
early discs by future Spinners' lead John Edwards.

Hope this helps.

Hi Davie,
Hmmmmmmmmm, sounds like it COULD be! Bobby Holiday, or maybe he said Holley (????). I don't think Bobby's on line, but Jay sees him all the time. Next time I talk to Jay, I'll ask him to ask Bobby about this. Thanx for your help.

Nikki,

I had a look at that "Stax Funk 2" CD which includes "Moving Dancer" by Bobby Holley.

The writer credits are given as "Robert L Holley
and Eddie Hollis"

So it looks as if this disc is nothing to do
with Bobby Calhoun / Bobby Holiday.

Bobby Holley does have a vague connection with Detroit in that Eddie Hollis, his co-writer is
the same guy as the co-writer of a few Junior
Walker tracks ( 'Hip City - pt. 1', 'Groove and Move', and 'At A Saturday Matinee')

So that was a bit of a dead end and we're no
further forward.
