I am pleased to announce the arrival of a new webisode at
http://soulfuldetroit.com/index.html
This is our first database and a was a bit more difficult to put together that I imagined.
Any help on errata or additions will be welcomed.
There are no credits on the opening page but the scan of The Final Decisions 45 is courtesy of Graham Finch.
I'll leave you to work out which studio is in the frame, but that shouldn't be too difficult!
Still operational today, it is now known as The Recording Institute of Detroit.
PAC3, which is outside the city limits will be featured seperately.

Great job David! I'm sure this database will grow - very quickly.
One note - I'm not sure that Mike Hanks owned 'The Pig Pen" when it was listed as under B C Redman; I asked his widow and that name didn't mean anything to her.

Hi David,
Nice job on the new webisode.
Detroit Sound's owner was a promoter called
Chip (?) Steiner .. I'm not certain about his
first name. His son was a member of The Wanted
who had four or five releases on the Detroit
Sound label a few of them were picked up for
national issue by A&M

Is this a world of fantasy or did I live in the mist of all of this musical history? I am as excited as you are Dave, and I grew up within these borders and boundries. GREAT JOB!

Well done David! Interesting. I would like to hear some of the jingle output of Detroit around this period, as it seemed to be an integral part of the music scene there. I always thought that Dallas had it sown up for years. My interest grew about Detroit labels after seeing a blue Ric Tic label, on the deck at Baileys, in Hull one evening and then the subsequent purchase of the Ric Tic relics album around 1974. I noticed the style was familiar to that of Motown and when I obtained a copy of Now shes gone and Dont be sore at me, I knew something was going down in the city (Detroit that is not Hull!!).

David and Lowell,
The addition of the new webisode adds credence to the authority of an already comprehesive and articulate web-site dedicated to 60's and 70's R&B. Once again, well done guys.

The actual studio is called The Disc. The Recording Institute leases space there, & their grad students are sometimed hired by the studio. I had an office there, plus I've used them since they opened long ago.

Have taken the 'tour' and am more than impressed.
As a former 'IT' trainer I say 'very well done'.
One day I hope to take the 'live tour'.
Many, many thanks.

Very cool. you know it would be really neat to add the various radio stations that were going big in the 60's i.e. C.K.L.W. and W.K.N.R.
I grew up in Detroit and listened to both of these stations-along withW.J.L.B.- Martha Jean the Queen.
My brother In-law turned me on to Keener web site.
It is as follows
KEENER13.COM.
You can hear their jingle and get a list of the top 31 songs of the year in Detroit from 1964-1970, plus much more
Enjoy

David,
Thanx for the incredible walk back through time. Took the Twenty Grand Tour...Gosh, sooo many memories..I was in the Gold Room EVERY Friday night. Remember seeing Aretha sing "Running Out of Fools" in the Driftwood Lounge when I was 18 (& using a married friend's i.d.). Almost fell off my chair when I saw that photo of Arthur Huckerby!!! I had forgotten about him. We used to go to the Graystone Ballroom & the 20 Grand every week just to see which flamboyantly fabulous outfit he would wear that night! And he never disappointed the crowd. If the walls in the 20 Grand Motel could have talked, my name most surely would have come up in the conversations! (lol) My oh my!!!! Thanx so much for the memories & the great pix.

Great Webisode! spurs a lot of memories and is such a learning tool!... I agree with TD...a discussion thread on the radio stations and dj's of the 60's would provide some interesting discussion, especially since many 60's dj's,eg., Lee Alan, Clark Reid and others contribute much info to this site.

Sorry on the name typo, David..his name was Oscar Huckerby.."Arthur Baby" was another colorful local character who was well known on the nite scene back during the day. I was thinking of both when I typed that msg. I warned you that the ol brain short circuits sometimes.

Thank you.
Our first anniversary story will be that of The Golden World Recording Company.
It is based on a nice interview with Ms Joanne Bratton and lots of detail from 45's.
Everybody, please stay tuned.

I'm sure there is much more to come at this wonderful place.
Mel,
Thanks for elevating me to legendary status. Not sure if I buy that, but it might play well on a resume.

Hi folks. Last year and the year before, my son James and I attended engineering classes at RID at the disc. We needed to learn more about engineering because I was building a recording studio at home. We were sitting in a class room and it looked familiar to me. It finally dawned on me why. I told my son James we were sitting in the studio room where I recorded Scorpio. A lot of the kids in the class had very little knowledge of that record or even Motown. It was an interesting class.

Kids in a class on recording who didn't know Dennis Coffey was sitting across from them! And I can't even bring myself to comment on the fact they lacked knowledge about Motown.
even (as has been mentioned previously) The Beastie Boys namecheck Dennis ("Like Dennis Coffey, I'm a Scorpio")
I would ask what the world is coming to, but it might make this thread a tad long and I don't want to upset Ralph!

Ade,
On that particular subject I would be just as guilty as you in adding to the length of the thread.
