Does anyone (hmm, maybe Sue) know of any Public Library/Archive/Reading Room etc. in the Detroit/Metro Detroit/Michigan-in-general area that has early ('69-'71) issues of Creem Magazine that one could browse through? The Reference Department at the State of Michigan Library here in Lansing has most issues from late '71 through '83 ( bound into volumes, just like "Time" and "Newsweek" heheh) but nothing earlier. I occasionaly see the older copies in used book stores or on ebay, but at exhorbitant prices; I'd be happy to sit in a room somewhere and leaf through 'em once for historical perspective. I realize this thread probably pushes the parameters of this site in terms of topic and time-period, but Creem WAS Detroit-centric, and in it's own unique way, kinda soulful.
Any leads would be appreciated
Steve K.

Steve,
Hey Creem put Smokey on the cover, on one of those early ones, too! There was a lotta Motown and Detroit R&B in there.

The State of Michigan Library has bound Creems through '83? Wow I'm stunned, and I feel weird somehow that the State has indexed my stuff, as well as Lester Bangs' Romilar-fuelled epics like "James Taylor Marked For Death." I'll sniff around, there's a mini-reunion of Creemsters next Saturday and I'll see what anybody knows.

I was amazed to find out a few years back that the Princeton Univ. Library had all Creems filed and indexed in its library. I'd met a recent Princeton grad, a 21-year-old who had all the cutlines and Boy Howdy profiles memorized!

There is a guy who bought the rights to Creem and is posting old Creem stories online, without the permission of the writers, and not in the original layout form, but I'll pass on giving out his URL since many of us, including Dave Marsh, are in severe outrage over the whole thing. Any copyright lawyers out there?

Sue

Sorry to hear that - CREEM was a fine mag.

Maybe you should put this guy on a mailing list, then we can forward all our bogus messages to him!

Sue,
Thanks for looking into it for me; I know that the Lester-years are highly regarded, but I even enjoyed the later stuff. Writers such as yourself, Robert Duncan etc.-I mean ,Duncan in particular and another guy, I think his name was Rick Johnson; nine times out of ten they wrote about bands I didn't care for in the least and yet the writing was so interesting that i liked the articles anyway. The magazine was often good ol' intelligent entertainment. The earlier years, from what I remember, were a little more locally focused though, which is why I'd like to see the '69-'71's.
Thanks Again- Steve k.

Steve,
Check out rockcritics.com for a brand new interview of Rick Johnson. Gives his background, philosophy of life, what he's been doing lately.

Sue,
Thanks for the heads-up on rockcritics.com - I've already read a bunch of interviews; it's funny-the writers whose work I enjoyed interview so well - the ones whose work i didn't care for come across as arch and twit-like in their interviews. So when are they doing a feature on you, eh?
Steve

Mark,
I don't know you, nor does anyone I know from Creem know you. Judging from your post, I guess I don't want to, either.
