IN THE SUMMER OF 1968 ON MY BREAK FROM SCHOOL I WAS ON THE ROAD PLAYING GUITAR AND CONDUCTING FOR A VOCAL GROUP CALLED THE VIBRATIONS. DURING THIS TIME WE WERE BOOKED INTO THE TWENTY GRAND FOR A GIG. AMONG THE MANY LUMINARIES I CAN REMEMBER BEING IN ATTENDANCE WERE THE FOUR TOPS,OTIS AND MELVIN FROM THE TEMPTS,BRIAN AND EDDIE HOLLAND,CLAY MC MURRAY,TAMMI TERRELL,NORMAN WHITFIELD,ROBERT GORDY,AND EDWIN STARR.WE STAYED AT THE ADJACENT MOTEL
DURING THIS VISIT I MET EDDIE HAZEL AND HE TOLD ME OF THE NEW CONCEPT THAT HE HAD CALLED FUNKADELIC FUSING FUNK WITH WITH PSYCEDELIC MUSIC.
HE TOLD ME THAT HE WAS REHEARSING WITH TIKI FULLWOOD ,WHO I HAD KNOWN AND WORKED WITH IN PHILLY.TIKI HAD ALSO DONE SOME GIGS WITH THE VIBRATIONS AT ONE POINT AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER HE MOVED TO PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY WHERE HE HOOKED UP WITH THE FUTURE FUNKADELICS.
ALSO DURING THID TIME I MET MIKE TERRY WHO INVITED ME TO PLAY ON AN INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM THAT HE WAS DOING AT TERA SHIRMA, WHERE I WORKED IN THE COMPANY OF EDDIE WILLIS, BOB BABBIT AND GEORGE MC GREGOR.
I WILL ALWAYS HOLD THIS EXPERIENCE DEAR TO MY HEART FOR I FORGED SOME LASTING FRIENDSHIPS DURING THIS TIME.

hi bobby
that motel is still standing.

graham was able to uncover that ed wingate of golden world owned it in the sixties.

so the vibrations played the 20 grand. wow!!

what can you remember of the venue? was it in the driftwood lounge? do you remember the bowling alley etc.? what numbers would the vibrations play on that tour?

these are the kind of crazy questions you'll get asked on here!

the vibrations 'surprise party for baby' is one of my all-time faves. released on neptune.

DAVID,
THE GIG WAS IN THE DRIFTWOOD LOUNGE.
THE STAGE WAS JUST TO THE RIGHT AS YOU CAME INTO THE ROOM.THE DRESSING ROOM WAS TO THE RIGHT OF THE STAGE IF YOU WERE FACING THE AUDIENCE
THE VIBRATIONS SET AT THAT TIME INCLUDED IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER,LOVE IN THEM THERE HILLS, SMOKE SIGNALS, THE WATUSI, MISTY,SPINNING WHEEL,OH CINDY, THINK,MY GIRL SLOOPY ( THE ORIGINAL TITLE)
THOSE ARE THE ONES I CAN REMEMBER. SURPRISE PARTY HAD NOT YET BEEN RECORDED.
I DID BOWL A FEW GAMES IN THE BOWLING ALLEY WHICH WAS TO THE REAR AND DOWNSTAIRS.
I WILL ADD SOME MORE JUST AS SOON AS MY MEMORY ALLOWS.

i read an article from a 1975 soul music magazine tonight which placed 'prove yourself a lady' by james bounty at no.3 in fans all-time northern soul records. you were co-writer of this wonderful song.

i've always been a fan of it's lyrics and fantastic production.

how do you rate it and when did you last hear it!

tell us about mr matico too, please.

p.s. i'm enjoying your reminisces of the 20 grand. keep it coming.

DAVID,

THE STORY ON PROVE YOURSELF A LADY GOES LIKE THIS.AROUND 1966 I MET TWO GUYS NAMED JEFF PRUSAN AND ERWIN GRIPMAN.THEY WERE LEAVING AND I WAS GOING INTO THE STUDIO CALLED SOUND PLUS WHICH LATER BECAME SIGMA IN 1968. WE STRUCK UP A CONVERSATION AND EXCHANGED PHONE NUMBERS ALL SENSING THAT WE HAD ONE THING IN COMMON AND THAT WAS SOUL MUSIC.THEY MENTIONED THAT THEY HAD A FRIEND NAMED BUD ROSS (ROSS MATICO) WHO HAD A USED CAR LOT WITH AN OFFICE WHERE THEIR GROUP WOULD REHEARSE.SO THEN WE ALL GOT TOGETHER AT THE CAR LOT TO PUT OUR HEADS TOGETHER AND SEE WHAT WE COULD DO TOGETHER.WE STARTED A COMPANY CALLED BAD BAG PRODUCTIONS AND MEAN GROOVE MUSIC. WE EACH PUT UP $500 A PIECE FOR OUR FIRST PRODUCTION.
I NEW A GROUP CALLED THE THREE STRANGERS WHO USED TO COME TO MY HOUSE TO REHEARSE.SO I HAD THEM MEET US AT THE CAR LOT TO REHEARSE SOME SONGS THAT JEFF AND I WROTE.
WE HAD FOUR SONGS FOR THEM SO WE TAUGHT THEM ALL FOUR AND WHEN THEY WERE READY WE TOOK THEM TO 919 SOUND IN PHILLY TO RECORD.
THE SESSION TURNED OUT GREAT SO WE STARTED SHOPPING. ONE OF THE COMPANIES I WANTED TO SEE WAS SUE RECORDS SO WE WENT TO SEE JUGGY MURRY AND HE LIKED WHAT WE HAD BUT HE WANTED TO CHANGE THE GROUP NAME TO THE THIEVES BECAUSE HE FELT THEY WOULD STEAL THE GIRLS HEARTS.
HE STARTED A NEW SUBSIDIARY CALLED BROADWAY RECORDS AND DECIDED TO MAKE WHY DID YOU DO IT TO ME THEIR FIRST RELEASE.
ONE DAY WE WERE AT THE CAR LOT AND THERE WAS A GUY LOOKING AT A USED CAR WITH HIS GIRL FRIEND AND HE WAS SINGING ALONG WITH THE RADIO THAT WAS PLAYING OUTSIDE. I THINK IT WAS AN OTIS READING SONG.HE HAD AN INTERESTING RASP IN HIS VOICE AND WE TOOK NOTICE.I HAD MY GUITAR WITH ME SO WE ASKED HIM TO COME INSIDE AND TRY SOME SONGS.
WE HUNG OUT FOR HOURS GOING OVER CURRENT SONGS THAT HE KNEW.HE SAID HIS NAME WAS JAMES BUNTING BUT WITH HIS DRAWL IT CAME OUT SOUNDING LIKE BOUNTY. WE ALL LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AND DECIDED THE WEVE GOT SOMETHING HERE SO WE WROTE SOME SONGS FOR HIM.ONE WAS LIFE WILL BEGIN AGAIN ,KIND OF A DEEP SOUL SONG AND PROVE YOURSELF A LADY ,WHICH WE WANTED TO DO IN THE MOTOWN STYLE.
SO WE EACH PUT UP ANOTHER $500 A PICE AND WENT INTO THE REGENT STUDIOD WHICH USED TO BE CAMEO-PARKWAY AND WE RECORDED THOSE SONGS.
THE RHYTHM SECTION CONSISTED OF KARL CHAMBERS ON DRUMS,WIN WILFORD ON BASS,MYSELF AND ROLAND CHAMBERS ON GUITARS AND LEON MITCHELL ON PIANO.
THE HORNS WERE ADDED LATER. THE BACKING VOCALS WERE THE MELLOW MOODS AND THE THIEVES.
WE WENT TO NEW YORK AND MICKEY KAPP AT COMPASS RECORDS BOUGHT THE MASTERS.
SUBSEQUENTLY WE WENT INTO BELL SOUND IN NEW YORK TO DO TWO MORE SONGS, RAGS TO RICHES AND ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS.
IN 1986 I MET IAN LEVINE IN A STUDIO IN LONDON AND HE YELLED UP THE STAIRS TO TELL ME THAT I HAD A SMASH. I THOUGHT HE WAS MAD WHEN HE ASKED ME IF I WERE THE SAME PERSON WHO WROTE PROVE YOURSELF A LADY. I THOUGHT I WAS IN A TIME WARP WHEN HE SAID IT WAS A NORTHERN SOUL SMASH AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
INCIDENTALLY,THAT SONG WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAD A SONG CHARTED IN AMERICA!!!

is the hit factory a refurbishment of bell sound or is it a 'new' building?

was bell sound a basement studio?

the people at kapp provided with 1 of the best albums of all time in the hesitations.

the freddie butler album is pretty damn good too.

i wish we could get jack ashford on here to tell us where they were recorded. hesitations is rumoured to be tera shirma - don't know about that, however.

DAVID,
THE HIT FACTORY IS A REFURBISHMENT OF BELL SOUND. SOMEONE ELSE HAD IT HAD IT IN BETWEEN TIMES BUT IM NOT CERTAIN WHO.
BELL SOUND WAS NOY A BASEMENT STUDIO.IT WAS A COMPLEX WITH THREE STUDIOS ON THREE SEPERATE FLOORS AND DON COSTA PRODUCTIONS ON ANOTHER FLOOR.
IT WAS USED BY TONS OF SIXTIES ARTISTS SUCH AS DIONNE WARWICK, CHUCK JACKSON,LEN BARRY, LITTLE ANTHONY,AND SCORES OF OTHERS.

Hi Jack,
Did you cut The Hesitations tracks at United Sound, or some other studio?
I think you owned (or run) various record labels in Detroit; Sepia, Ashford, Awake and Triple B. What did Triple B stand for? And what can you remember about Andrew Harris of Sport - Super Sonic Sound? Did they have their own recording facilities or use United?

Hi Bobby!

"Prove Yourself a Lady" doesn't do much for me, but the flip, "Life Will Begin Again", is one of the neatest deep tunes I've ever heard!

I should've kept the copy I had for that cool flip, but I traded it away! Not the first, nor last, rarity I've swapped.

Best,

Mark

Hey folks. I have a lot of fond memories of the Twenty Grand. I backed up the Velveletts and Edwin Star there. I did record hops for Frantic Ernie and other DJs in the other side. I heard T- Bone Walker there and sat at the bar with Bill Doggett. When I told Bill how much we Detroit musicians liked his music and learned all his records, he bought me a drink. Bill was cool. I also had a chance to do a session in New York with Billy Butler, his guitarist, and a fine player.

Oh Dennis.....how wonderful....the Velvelettes........they are my absolute favourites. Cal might be coming to the UK in June!!!

Were you at the 20 Grand when the Velvelettes dressed up in Batman outfits and sang Theme From Bateman. I bet they looked the part and sung even better!!!

I love Cal's voice, that girl makes a normally strong willed man go weak at the knees...

The first 'Cruisin' LP I bought here, in the UK, was 'WHK' color channel 14 with Johnny Holiday! On it was The Impressions/It's alright and some other gems, with commercials and jingles! Do you know the series? If I hear any of those records now, on the radio, I can hear the DJ introducing the tracks and cackling his fat and it triggers the jingle or whatever I can remember.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie (62.254.0.6 - 62.254.0.6) on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - 04:33 pm:

Hey Carl

That was a great series! Heaven knows how they got the rights to all those tracks (I assume they DID!?) - and the jocks, commercials and spots were fabulous.. especially to us folks here in the UK with no experience of this kind of radio.

I remember Tony Blackburn once came back from a US holiday and insisted on announcing all through his breakfast show, "you're listening to WRL on 247 AM - Wonderful Radio One."

Have you still got those Cruisin' albums?

Sadly, I do not have any of the Cruisin' albums. Can you beleive it was the jingles I was after in those days. I was a frustrated DJ and was fed up of not only hearing crap records in the discos, but there was no sparkle to the DJ performance. This was around 1975, when all of a sudden things started getting funky and my favs were not being played (and then, the records had been deleted and not available to buy). I had this crazy notion that great records and great jingles would spice up the evening and make it special.

What a shame! They were reissued a few years later, but this may only have been on cassette - I'm not sure. I never saw any new vinyl issues of them anyway. Sadly, they'd been tampered with, with one or two tracks deleted from each, and the odd track rather heavy-handedly edited in here and there.

Remember the cover pics with the two kids growing up through the years?!

It'd be great to see those reissued on CD, but I suspect the problem with licensing all those vintage records would rule it out. Probably a job for somebody like Rhino.

I have seen them on CD down Oxford Street, years ago! I should pay my respects and buy them.I remember also seeing a 'new' one, 1972, I think, so they started to release later years. I am sure if we searched the net they would crop up!

Thanks - but I wonder if the CDs are the originals or the "revised" versions??

Wasn't the original series released about 1970? I do remember the later volumes too, but found them less interesting, I'm afraid. (Much more interested in the earlier stuff!)

Top of pageBottom of page   By Carl Dixon London (80.194.94.69 - 80.194.94.69) on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - 10:26 am:

Don't know. Maybe they had to re master for CD and licence reasons. I still think they should market the product, now we have CD. So many American personalities are getting older now. Recordings from when they peaked, even if staged in a studio for this purpose is great.

I tried searching for CRUISIN' on Gemm and

BINGO!

I'd forgotten that Cruisin' 1956 was Robin Seymour.

The label was INCREASE, and the series ran 1955-1970. There's one seller offering all volumes (on CD) at $30 each, but the vinyl seems amazingly cheap. (Most are listed at under $10.00!)

Re the CDs - I thought Kev Roberts had copyrighted "For Millionaires Only" :o(

Hi Carl

From memory... Motown tracks - no!

Here's a list of the volumes and the jocks:

1955 - JUMPING GEORGE OXFORD
1956 - ROBIN SEYMOUR
1957 - JOE NIAGARA
1958 - JACK CARNEY
1959 - HUNTER HANCOCK
1960 - DICK BIONDI
1961 - ARNIE "WOO WOO" GINSBURG
1962 - RUSS "WEIRD BEARD" KNIGHT
1963 - B. MITCHELL REED
1964 - JOHNNY HOLIDAY
1965 - ROBERT W. MORGAN
1966 - PAT O'DAY
1967 - DR DON ROSE
1968 - JOHNNY DARK
1969 - HARRY MOORE
1970 - ERIC STEVENS

PS - Johnny Dark was one of the most popular DJs on a British pirate station in 1966. His "R&B Nightride" Show got the most fan mail, which bugged the other jocks. He was never on the ship - his shows were recorded in the US and played on air from tapes!

Just out of curiosity, does anyone out there have a photo of the Twenty Grand that shows the outside of the building. When we were doing the research for the Funk Brothers' movie, we found a lot of interior shots but couldn't find a shot of the building's entrance with a sign that said "Twenty Grand." (Our other photo dissapointment was that we couldn't find a shot of the finale from "Motown 25" with all the stars on stage." We needed it for one of the final scenes in the movie.)

Hello: I remember the 20 Grand well. Around 1964-66 I dated a woman who lived on Warren Avenue about two blocks away from the 20 Grand. I would go to her house, hang out until about 11 or midnight, then slide over to the 20 Grand. I had an older sister who worked as a bar tender there for a while so I didn't have to pay a cover or for my drinks either. I saw many, many good acts at the 20 Grand, a lot of the early motown artists who would be great singers a few years later. I remember just standing around outside the 20 Grand some nights telling the hookers "No, thanks", and just watching the swells pull up in their Superfly Cadillacs with suits and dresses that would light up the night. Great memories, really great.
